HYMNS IN HEAVEN

"And he shall go out unto the altar that is before the Lord" {Lev. 16:18}. In this connection Rabbi Judah quoted the verse: "God, God, the Lord, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof" {Ps. 50:1}.

He said: It has been taught us that at the break of the day a chorus of a thousand and five hundred and fifty myriads sing out hymns to God, and at midday, a thousand and five hundred and forty-eight, and at the time wich is known as "between the evenings", a thousand and five hundred and ninety myriads.

Rabbi Yose commented that at the dawning of the day all the heavenly hosts which are known as the "lords of shouting" greet it with utterances of praise, for then are all jubilant, and then judgement is lightened. At this moment the world rejoices and is blessed, and the Holy One, be blessed, rouses up Abraham {the representative of Mercy}, and holds glad converse with him and allows him the sway over the world. But at the time known as "between the evenings" the angels called "masters of howling" raise their voices, and through the world, contentiousness prevails. Then the Holy One, be blessed, bidding Isaac {the representative of stern Judgement} rise up, moves to judge the transgressors of the precepts of the law. There come forth seven rivers of fire to descend on the heads of the wicked, and also the burning coals of fire. Now Abraham retreats back, the day departs, and in Gehinnom the evildoers, groaning cry: "Woe unto us! for the day declineth, for the shadows of the evening are stretched out" {Jer. 6:4}.

Thus, at this hour, a man should take heed not to overlook the afternoon prayer. With the arrival of night, there are called forth from outside the curtain the other fifteen hundred and forty-eight myriads, and they intone hymns, whereupon the punishments from the netherworld are roused up and wander about the world, chanting praises until midnight, which is a watch and a half. Then, the north wind having stirred up and gone out, all the remaining congregate to sing Psalms until the daylight breaks and the morning stirs up, and gladness and blessing come back to the world.

עַד דַּהֲווֹ אָזְלֵי, יָתְבוּ בְּחַד חֲקַל, וְצַלּוּ. נָחַת חַד עֲנָנָא דְּאֶשָּׁא, וְאַסְחַר לוֹן. אָמַר רִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן, הָא חֲמֵינָא דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא רְעוּתָא דִּילֵיהּ הָכָא. נֵיתִיב. יָתְבוּ וַהֲווּ אַמְרֵי מִלֵּי דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא. פָּתַח וְאָמַר, (משלי כ״ה:כ״ה) מַיִם קָרִים עַל נֶפֶשׁ עֲיֵפָה וּשְׁמוּעָה טוֹבָה מֵאֶרֶץ מֶרְחָק, הָא אִסְתַּכַּלְנָא בְּמִלּוֹי דִּשְׁלֹמֹה מַלְכָּא, וְכֻלְּהוּ (ס''א בחכמתא) בְּחָכְמָה אַמָרָן.

תָּא חֲזֵי ג' סִפְרִין דְּחָכְמְתָא אַפִּיק שְׁלֹמֹה לְעָלְמָא, וְכֻלְּהוּ בְּחָכְמְתָא עִלָּאָה. שִׁיר הַשִּׁירִים חָכְמָה, קֹהֶלֶת תְּבוּנָה, וּמִשְׁלֵי דַּעַת. לָקֳבֵל ג' אִלֵּין, עֲבַד ג' סְפָרִים. שִׁיר הַשִּׁירִים כְּנֶגֶד חָכְמָה הָכֵי הוּא. קֹהֶלֶת לְקָבֵל תְּבוּנָה, הָכֵי הוּא. מִשְׁלֵי לְקָבֵל דַעַת. בְּמָאי אִתְחֲזֵי. אֶלָּא כָל אִינּוּן קְרַאֵי בִּתְרֵי גְּוָונֵי אִינּוּן, רֵישָׁא וְסֵיפָא תְּרֵי גְּוָונֵי אִתְחַזְיָיא. וְכַד מִסְתַּכְּלֵי קְרַאֵי, דָא כְּלִיל בְּדָא, וְדָא כְּלִיל בְּדָא, בְּגִין כָּךְ שָׁקִיל לָקֳבְלֵיהּ דְּדַעַת.

הַאי קְרָא לָאו רֵישֵׁיהּ סֵיפֵיהּ וְלָאו סֵיפֵיהּ רֵישֵׁיהּ. וְכַד אִסְתַּכַּלְנָא בֵּיהּ, כֹּלָּא כָּלִיל חַד בְּחַד, בֵּין מִסֵיפֵיהּ לְרֵישֵׁיהּ, בֵּין מֵרֵישֵׁיהּ לְסֵיפֵיהּ. שְׁמוּעָה טוֹבָה מֵאֶרֶץ מֶרְחָק מַיִם קָרִים עַל נֶפֶשׁ עֲיֵפָה. מַיִם קָרִים עַל נֶפֶשׁ עֲיֵפָה וּשְׁמוּעָה טוֹבָה מֵאֶרֶץ מֶרְחָק, וְדָא וְדָא נַיְיחָא דְּרוּחָא, כְּמָה דְּהַאי נַיְיחָא דְּרוּחָא, כַּךְ הַאי נַיְיחָא דְּרוּחָא.

עַד דַּהֲווֹ יַתְבֵי, אָתָא חַד בַּר נָשׁ, אָמַר, אִנְתּוּ דְּרִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אַתְּסִיאַת מִמַּרְעָהָא. וְחַבְרַיָּיא שָׁמְעוּ קָלָא, דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא שָׁבַק לְאִינּוּן חוֹבֵי דְּדָרָא. אָמַר רִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן, הָא אִתְקַיָּים הָכָא קְרָא, וּשְׁמוּעָה טוֹבָה מֵאֶרֶץ מֶרְחָק, הָכִי הוּא נַיְיחָא דְּרוּחָא, כְּמוֹ מַיִם קָרִים עַל נֶפֶשׁ עֲיֵפָה. אָמַר לְהוּ נְקוּם וְנֵזִיל דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא אַרְחִישׁ לָן בְּנִסִּין.

פָּתַח וְאָמַר, מַיִם קָרִים עַל נֶפֶשׁ עֲיֵפָה, דָּא אוֹרַיְיתָא. דְּכָל מַאן דְּזָכֵי לְמִלְעֵי בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא, וּמְרַוִי נַפְשָׁא מִנָּהּ, מַה כְּתִיב וּשְׁמוּעָה טוֹבָה מֵאֶרֶץ מֶרְחָק. קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא אַכְרִיז עָלֵיהּ כַּמָה טָבָאן לְאוֹטָבָא לֵיהּ בְּעָלְמָא דֵּין וּבְעָלְמָא דְּאָתֵי. הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, וּשְׁמוּעָה טוֹבָה, מַאן אֲתַר מֵאֶרֶץ מֶרְחָק, מֵאֲתַר דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא הֲוָה רָחִיק מִנֵּיהּ בְּקַדְמִיתָא, מֵאֲתַר דְּהֲוָה בַּר נָשׁ בִּדְבָבוּ עִמֵּיהּ בְּקַדְמִיתָא, דִּכְתִּיב, (איוב כ׳:כ״ז) וְאֶרֶץ מִתְקוֹמָמָה לוֹ, מֵהַהוּא אֲתַר
